New iPad Air 2 Pics Surface, Give More Hints At What To Expect

We’re nearing the end of the first week of July, and unsurprisingly enough, the stream of leaks and rumors surrounding Apple’s products continues to flow today as well. As you’ve most likely figured out already given the title above, we have some new bits and pieces of information regarding Apple’s upcoming gadgets, specifically the iPad Air 2. These new pieces of the Apple puzzle come in the form of a handful of new pictures showcasing the iPad Air next to an alleged iPad Air 2 mockup. It seems like we’ve had to deal with a ton of mockups lately and we’re eagerly waiting
for that big day when we’ll finally lay our
eyes on a genuine next-gen Apple tablet.
Until then however, all we can do is to keep an eye out for any kind of useful information that may pop-up, and more often than not, these mockups actually hold a lot of secrets.
  

iPad Air 2 Mockup Reveals Design Cues

A handful of photos depicting an alleged iPad Air 2 mockup, side-by-side to an iPad Air, have been recently shared by the Japanese online publication known as ASCII Plus. From these shots, the first thing we’ve noticed was the presence of a Touch ID sensor where the regular home button should be. This hasn’t taken us by surprise given the previous rumors suggesting that all upcoming Apple smartphones and tablets will have a fingerprint scanner, but it’s always nice to have “reconfirmation”. After all, it would’ve been a lot odder if the Touch ID was missing altogether.

Why are we saying that this might be a mock-up? The Apple logo is missing from the back panel.

In addition, the iPad Air 2 appears to be at least 1 mm thinner than the current model, and it seems like it will boast the same diamond cut edge that attracts the eye (as opposed to iPhone 6′s rounded edges and seamless transition between the screen and the body).

Interestingly enough, the lock switch is also missing from the Air 2, as Apple has allegedly decided to fit as few physical buttons on its next-gen iPad as possible. As such, the portrait / landscape switch has been removed, and its function can be accessed via the notification center. Even the volume buttons are less protruded on the newer model.
Lastly, it seems like the iPad Air 2 measures roughly the same as the iPad Air, meaning that in theory, the Air’s flip case should be compatible with the Air 2. Sadly, the position of the camera and the physical buttons is different on the next-gen tablet, so a slightly redesigned flip cover is also necessary.
