Toshiba today unveiled the Encore Mini, which seems to be the cheapest
tablet ever to run a full version of Windows 8.1. The slate was
developed following a “close” collaboration with Microsoft, and it’s
obviously the Redmond giant’s attempt to compete with the army of
ultra-cheap Android tablets available all around the world.
The Toshiba Encore Mini costs $119, and can be bought starting today from Toshiba’s online store and major retailers. It sports a 7-inch display with a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution, running what Microsoft is calling “Windows 8.1 with Bing”, and offering free 1-year subscription to Office 365 Personal, plus 1 TB (one terabyte) of OneDrive storage space. The new tablet further features Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, a 2 MP rear camera, VGA front-facing camera “with microphone”, 1.83 GHz Intel Atom Z3735G processor, 1 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of expandable internal memory. It seems that Toshiba is selling only a white version of the Encore Mini, with no word on the future availability of other colors.
Would you consider getting this $119 Windows 8.1 slate from Toshiba, or do you think there are more attractive Android tablets at this price point out there?
