While Samsung has not said anything about its plans to make Android
5.0 Lollipop available for the Galaxy Note 4, a tweet from the company
earlier this week fueled speculation that the latest version of the
flagship phablet could receive the new firmware sooner than expected.
Other than tweeting about the Galaxy Note 4’s Quad HD display, Samsung added an image of lollipops on the device’s screen, which many believe to be hint that Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Note 4 is on its way.
The Android 5.0 Lollipop, the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system, is also expected to be released for the Samsung Galaxy S5 sometime in December, SamMobile reported Friday, adding that the firmware update could take a month or so from its initial rollout to reaches all compatible devices worldwide.
Introduced at the Google I/O conference in June as Android L, the Android 5.0 Lollipop is the biggest update to the OS since Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The update brings a new material design user interface and updated notification functions. Other key features of the firmware include lock screen notifications, multi-user support for phones, 64-bit processor support and file sharing through Android Beam to name a few.
Although the new Android version is still more than a month away, SamMobile recently posted a video, which showed a test build of Android 5.0 Lollipop running on a Galaxy S5. Here’s the video:
Other Devices
While Samsung is mum about the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for its devices, other smartphone manufacturers have already mentioned plans to upgrade some of their devices to the new firmware.
Motorola updated its support page last week with a list of handsets that will get Android 5.0 Lollipop in the future. However, the company did not provide specific dates for the update.
Sony also announced last week that Android 5.0 Lollipop will be released for the entire Xperia Z series of device, which includes Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
According to Sony, the Z Ultra Google Play edition devices will be the first to get the update, while the company will start the upgrade for the Z3 and Z2 series at the beginning of 2015, continuing thereafter for all remaining devices.
When it comes to HTC, a leak earlier this week suggested that the company’s HTC One (M8) and HTC One (M7) Google Play edition devices are likely to get the update between November and December, while the standard versions with HTC’s Sense user interface could receive the update starting between January and February of next year.
