Samsung donates 3,000 Galaxy smartphones (worth $1 million) to help the fight against Ebola |
Samsung today announced that it’s helping the United Nations to fight
against Ebola by donating 3,000 Android smartphones (worth around $1
million). Donated via the United Nations Office for the Coordination of
Human Affairs, the handsets will reach 60 medical facilities in Guinea,
Liberia, and Sierra Leone - three African countries that currently face
the worst Ebola epidemic in history.
All smartphones that will be donated are Galaxy S3 Neo models. The S3 Neo (pictured on the left) is a refresh of the Galaxy S3 flagship from 2012, and, although it doesn’t offer the latest and greatest features, it’s still a very capable handset. Medical staff will be able to use the smartphones and UN’s Smart Health Pro mobile app to gather medical data, while patients will have a way to contact their families. All donated devices will be destroyed after the Ebola outbreak ends (hopefully soon).
Samsung further said that it’s providing financial support for the purchase of equipment and distribution of hand sanitizers, while also launching an Ebola SMS service (only in South Africa for now).
