All
eyes are again on Samsung Electronics Co. now that it's reported to be
working on its next flagship, the Galaxy S6. The new device, noted under
the codename “Project Zero,” is already churning the rumor mills, even
though it probably won’t be released until next spring.
Early rumors suggest that Samsung may announce the Galaxy S6 at the 2015 World Mobile Congress conference, which will take place in Barcelona in early March. Samsung is looking to release the Galaxy S6 in March to reverse its sales slump with a fresh new flagship, according to Korean news outlet Daum. Devices in the Galaxy S line tend to be Samsung’s top sellers. The manufacturer announced its Galaxy S5 smartphone at the 2014 WMC in late February, but the device didn't come out until mid-April.
Reports out of South Korea also suggest the Galaxy S6 may feature a “dual-edged” display. Advancing on the design concept of the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, which features a screen that curves around the right edge of the phone, the Galaxy S6 may feature a curved screen on both sides. The design is expected to help Samsung expand the size of the Galaxy S6 display without significantly increasing the size of the phone.
“The dual edge is expected to be beneficial for Samsung Display, the main display supplier for the smartphone-maker, as larger displays bring more profit,” Jerry Kang, senior analyst of the consultant firm IHD Technology, said at the IHS Display Analyst Conference last Thursday.
With Samsung hoping to turn around its declining sales in the coming year; consumers can expect some major changes in the manufacturer’s smartphones. Samsung has already launched a number of devices that incorporate metal into their design, such as the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Alpha. Recently announced devices like the Galaxy A3 and the Galaxy S5 are made almost entirely of metal.
Rumors suggest the Galaxy S6 may include features such as a Quad HD (2560 x 1440) display, a 64-bit processor, increases in storage capacities, a powerful camera and a single chip to house all of the devices’ sensors. Samsung executives have also indicated that the next device in the Samsung Galaxy S line will feature a new, still unknown, design material. However, it is still too early to really know what features will make it on to the Galaxy S6.
