The original HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 models running HTC’s Sense software may receive new Android 5.0 Lollipop software in less than three weeks, which would keep in step with HTC’s promise for a speedy rollout following Google’s software launch in October.
HTC began pushing Android 5.0 to its HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 Google Play Edition models in early December. These handsets run stock Android with no software addictions by manufacturers, much like Google’s Nexus devices, allowing them to update earlier. Dutch tech blog Tech Tastic says the HTC One M8 and M7 may begin to update on Jan. 3, a date that HTC will reportedly announce at an event in London.
The HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 Google Play Edition updated to Google’s most recent patch update, Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, which addresses number of issues, including the “factory reset bug” and the “video playback bug.” Users can likely expect the original HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 to also update to Android 5.0.1, or possibly future patch update released closer to January.
HTC has become extremely transparent about its software updates in the past year. Officials, including Jason Mackenzie, president of HTC Americas, have kept users updated on various rollout schedules. Additionally, the manufacturer published its “Anatomy of an Android OS Update” information page last year. The page includes details on the many steps it takes to get new operating systems from the developer to the customer, and it also includes a timeline for the update process.
HTC has revamped its software update page in accordance with the Android 5.0 update. The page indicates that Android 5.0 is still in the early stages of implementation onto HTC devices; however, the page does not include specific date information for updates
Prior reports have suggested that the One M8 and HTC One M7 might update between January and March. Other devices expected to receive Android 5.0 Lollipop include the HTC Desire EYE, HTC One (M8) Dual SIM, HTC One (M7) Dual SIM, HTC One (E8), HTC One (E8) Dual SIM and HTC Butterfly 2, which may update between January and March. The HTC One Mini 2, Desire 816 should update between March and April. The HTC One Max, HTC One Mini, HTC Butterfly S may update between March and May.
Users can check HTC’s update information page to find out whether their device is close to receiving Android 5.0 Lollipop.
