After the official sneak peek of iOS 9 that Apple gave us last month,
the developer preview of the upcoming version of the platform got
quickly seeded to developers. It was the first, yet totally not the only
developer preview that had been slated for this summer.
What's new in iOS 9 beta 3
One of the highlights of iOS 9 beta 3 (build number 13A4293f) is the
arrival of the Apple News app. Just like iOS 9, it's in beta as well.
This app features editor-curated and hand-picked news stories in a
handful of different categories; as a refresher, the approach with Apple
Music's Beats 1 playlist radio is similar.
Apart from Apple
News, iOS 9 beta 3 also comes with improved Photos app - it now has
dedicated folders for your screenshots and selfies, which can
potentially reduce the clutter in the gallery by a fair margin. In
addition, it also marks the apogee of the venerable "selfie".
The
new beta preview also introduces several new icons in the built-in Mail
app, as well as a revamped Calendar icon that will pop up if you search
for said app in Spotlight Search. On the iPad, the icon layout in
folders now supports 4 x 4-icon layouts, up from 3 x 3 ones.
Apple
Music has also scored the ability to stream high-quality music over
cellular data, which is currently available only on a Wi-Fi connection.
Speaking of music and sounds, it seems that Siri will no longer make
that iconic sound alert when you start it in silent mode, which is a
pretty nifty change. This won't be the last beta of iOS 9 - Apple will
release a public one sometime in July.
