Beware, Nvidia Shield tablet owners! The
company announced a voluntary recall of Shield tablets sold over the
past 12 months over a safety issue. It is reported that the battery
inside the tablet can overheat and pose a fire hazard. To prevent folks'
hands or houses from burning down, Nvidia is asking users to stop using
the recalled tablet and fill a claim for a replacement device.
To understand whether you're eligible for a recall or not, make sure your Shield tablet is updated to the latest software, dated July 1 or newer (consult the Settings > About tablet > System Updates). Then go to the Settings > About tablet > Status, and check out the tiny text under the Battery category. If it says "B01", you're gold, but if you see "Y01", it means your tablet is due for replacement.
Affected units will also receive notifications that include the device's serial number and a link to a tablet recall page on Nvidia's website. You will have to agree to get your original tablet "deactivated remotely and rendered unusable" as part of the process, so be sure to back-up any data that you don't want to have erased.
On a side note, we totally didn't expect our April fools' joke about Nvidia and overheating to become a reality, but hey, such is life sometimes!
