Samsung Galaxy Note5 and S6 edge+ found to aggressively close tasks in the background

If you've used the Galaxy S6 or the S6 edge for any appreciable amount of time you'd have noticed by now the phones have a habit of aggressively closing apps in the background even when there is no real shortage of system memory on the devices. This means, every time you go back to an app after a while it loads again instead of just quickly resuming state from the time you left it.

Galaxy Note5 is now available to buy, but only in Taiwan

 

 

While some lucky AT&T customers might get their Galaxy Note5 in the next few days, the brand new device will actually not be launched before August 21 in the US (and other regions). However, the handset is already available to buy in one market. It's not South Korea (Samsung's home country), but Taiwan.

The Samsung Galaxy Note5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ are finally official, the first - a month ahead of its established product cycle, the second - replacing the proof-of-concept Note Edge with a market-proven mainstream design.

It's become a tradition of sorts to expect a new Galaxy Note come September. This year the schedule has been shifted a bit in an attempt to give the phablet a head start over Apple's next gen iPhone Plus, which would probably be announced in the first third of September as well.

The Galaxy Note Edge, launched parallel to last year's Note 4, was the spark that ignited the whole edge-screen craze - a craze, which so rapidly turned into widespread adoption with only the second-gen device - the Galaxy S6 edge - that even Samsung was caught unprepared and couldn't deliver on the initial demand. This time Samsung has an even stronger trump card than last year's Note Edge - they're calling it the Galaxy S6 edge+, with hopes for the new device to inherit the immense success of the S6 edge.

Prominent leakster @evleaks, who just hours ago gave us a glimpse of a couple of official images of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+, has gotten a hold of the Note 5's specs now. Certain things come as no surprise, but other revelations will undoubtedly disappoint more than a few among you.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will come with a 5.66-inch display with QHD resolution. Third generation in a row, the Note series hasn't grown in size after the Galaxy Note 3 established the 5.7-inch sweet spot two years ago.

It was about time we got treated to a few official images of Samsung's upcoming high-end phablets - after all the announcement of the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ is scheduled for less than two weeks from now on August 13, and how tight of a seal can you keep on those leaks?

The press renders in question come courtesy of @evleaks, and given his track record and previous live images, which popped up here and there, you can bet they are the real thing.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 sports a bolder controls design, its capacitive Task switcher/Back buttons nearly twice as large as those on the Galaxy S6 edge+. The thin bezels also catch our eye, and the groove in the top of the S-Pen keeps entertaining our minds, trying to figure out if it will be clickable or not.

Samsung has officially confirmed that the next Galaxy Unpacked event is scheduled on August 13 at Lincoln Center in New York, US. While the company remains tight-lipped about products expected at the launch, a new Galaxy Note 5 CDMA variant for the Verizon network appears online.

A Geekbench mentions that the Galaxy Note 5 for the Verizon network will use Samsung’s own Exynos 7420 mobile chipset and has 4GB of RAM. It appears to be the same octa-core chipset also reported in the Galaxy S6 Edge+, and already used in the Galaxy S6 as well as Galaxy S6 Edge.

The phone in question carries SM-N920V model number, which is consistent with Verizon’s Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910V) and Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900V).

The Note 5 variant in the listing runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, which is expected to be factory loaded with the latest version of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top of it.

Exclusive: Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is using Exynos 7422, 4GB of RAM after all

There's been a lot of speculation recently regarding the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and its hardware in particular. We've seen more and more contradictory bits of information as we get closer to the handset's rumored unveiling date in mid-August, but today we may be able to clear up some confusions.

Thanks to an anonymous tipster, we have received a screenshot of the system info tab in CPU-Z running on a Note 5. You can see this to the left.

The phone in question is a prototype of the international version, which will have the model number SM-N920F. This iteration of the next Galaxy Note will indeed come sporting Samsung's own Exynos 7422 chipset, as has been rumored before.

This has been said to be an improved version of the Exynos 7420 found in the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. Furthermore, it should be the first Samsung-made silicon to feature the modem on the same chip as the CPU and GPU.

Once again, it's confirmed that the Note 5 will have 4GB of RAM. It's also going to have 32GB of built-in storage in this version, though it's still unclear if a microSD card slot will be in there too.
Finally, it looks like the screen size and resolution will be kept identical to those of the phablet's predecessor, the Galaxy Note 4. That said, the Note 5's 5.7-inch QHD panel will surely receive some upgraded tech, as Samsung has done each year in the Note line.

At the moment, the prototype in question is running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, which is the latest version Google has released so far. There's no reason to think the Note 5 will launch running anything else. Obviously though, expect to see Samsung's TouchWiz UI plastered on top, probably in a similarly toned down fashion to what happened for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge earlier this year.

Just a few hours ago we saw live images of a purported Galaxy Note 5 prototype, which confirmed that it won't get an auto-eject mechanism for the S Pen stylus.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Samsung would launch the Galaxy Note 5 and a larger variant of the Galaxy S6 edge — dubbed the S6 edge+ — ahead of schedule, with both handsets getting announced in August. Korean news outlet Business Korea has corroborated the timeline, stating that Samsung will hold an event in New York on August 13 to unveil the handsets.

That date isn't far off from what was mentioned in an earlier report, and at this stage it is looking more and more likely that we'll indeed see the phones making their debut in under a month's time.

To add more fuel to the fire, a phone matching the model number of the upcoming Galaxy Note 5 (SM-N920F) was spotted entering India for R&D purposes by local import export website Zauba. Samsung has three R&D centers in India that work on smartphone and SoC development, and it is likely that the manufacturer has sent prototype units to India for testing ahead of its launch next month.
