ZTE says Huawei lifted the Nexus 6P design from its Grand S (Athena)

Remember ZTE's Athena or Grand S? Neither does most of the phone-buying public these days, but the ZTE marketing chief is apparently convinced that Huawei has ripped it off to enter the big leagues with its first Nexus handset, the 6P. ZTE’s head of marketing Lu Qian Hao took to the Weibo airwaves, and indirectly hinted that the little black strip on the back of the 6P is a derivative of the Athena's own elliptical strip right at the same place.

ZTE outlines plans for IFA, global flagship Axon is the centerpiece

ZTE is prepping for one of the biggest events in the mobile world in Berlin. This year's IFA takes place September 4-9 and as always will gather all the big names with their latest and greatest devices.

What the Chinese company will bring to the show is members of its four global product lines - Axon, Blade, Nubia, and Spro. The ZTE Axon top model is the obvious choice to lead the pack - ZTE's first flagship, available globally.

T-Mobile has announced a new Android smartphone today. It's the ZTE Obsidian, and it will become available from the magenta carrier, online and in stores, on August 13.

ZTE unveils Axon Lux, Axon Mini and Axon Watch

As part of its market expansion strategy ZTE announced three new Axon devices for China - two smartphones and a smartwatch.

1. ZTE Axon Lux

ZTE Axon Lux is the best spec'd device of the lot - it's has a 5.5" Quad HD display and Snapdragon 810 chipset. The Axon Lux features Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass, 4GB of RAM, 128GB expandable storage, a 3,000 mAh battery and 8MP front camera. On the back of the Axon Lux there is a dual-camera setup with a 13MP and a 2MP sensors.

ZTE Axon Lux bets on the faux-leather design and runs on Lollipop with MiFavor 3.2 UI on top. It features three types of biometric security - fingerprint scanner, voice recognition and eye-scanner. NFC secure payments are supported, of course.

 

The ZTE Axon Lux will launch at $625 and for now it will be on sale only in China.

The regular ZTE Axon, which already debuted in USA and Canada, has now be confirmed it will make it to China as well. It doesn't have a the faux leather back, comes with a lower 1080p resolution 5.5" display, keeps the Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass and the Snapdragon 810 chip but with "just" 3GB RAM, and comes with 32GB expandable storage. The battery is still a 3,000 mAh unit.

ZTE Axon

ZTE Axon has the same camera setup as Axon Lux 13MP+2MP over the back plus an 8MP sensor at the front. It supports all three types of biometric security, too.

The ZTE Axon costs $435 in the USA and will be released in Canada and China as well.

Finally, the ZTE Axon Mini is the mysterious one of the trio. It was announced as the first phone to feature force touchscreen and will rely on a 5.2" Super AMOLED unit. No other specs have been confirmed at this point. Pricing and availability are a mystery too.

ZTE also announced the Axon Watch with 1.4" circular display, sapphire glass coating and IP67 certification. The Axon Watch other key specs include 4GB storage, 512MB RAM, Bluetooth 4.1, and a 300 mAh battery.

The Axon Watch will run on the Tencent OS, not Android Wear, and will be sold exclusively in China.

ZTE's Nubia Z7 line might get at least one successor in the near future. This could be called Nubia Z9, keeping with the Chinese company's way of doing things (it went from Z5 to Z7, after all). And it may have incredibly thin lateral bezels for its screen, as shown in the two images you can see below (click for full-res versions).

 

The leaked phone features the distinctive red circle Home button which has so far been a trademark for the Nubia-branded handsets. So it definitely might be the Z9. Then again, do keep your grain of salt around for this one, as the images both come from the same source.

ZTE announces the giant Grand XMAX for Cricket at $199

Fresh off the launch of the ZMAX, ZTE is back with another giant phone, the Grand XMAX which comes in at 6-inches and is bound for Cricket priced at $199.99. It'll be available online and in store from October 10, and for your money you're getting a 1280x720 resolution display, a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 200 CPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage with a microSD card slot.

ZTE went on stage today, unveiling its much-rumored new crop of handsets in its upscale Nubia line. Just as we heard before, there is a Nubia Z7 in play, ready to take the torch from the current Nubia Z5 flagship, but ZTE will also flank it with the Z7 Max and Z7 mini. After the news from earlier today about a couple of Nubia-branded devices being certified in China, ZTE is once again in the spotlight.
The Chinese company has chosen to keep teasing its upcoming Nubia Z7 smartphone, though it's done so by taking a pretty interesting approach.

Two unannounced ZTE Nubia phones hit Chinese TENAA

Two ZTE smartphones have been spotted at the Chinese TENAA (an equivalent to the FCC in the USA) carrying the model numbers NX507J and NX505J. Both have undergone the approval process of the Chinese authority a few weeks ago.
Neither of the phones is the Nubia Z7 that ZTE teased last month, judging from the photos released.
The rumored specifications of the new higher-end of the two new phones include a 5.5" 1080p display, a Snapdragon 801 chipset with a 2.3GHz quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (microSD slot is present, too).
