Audi A1 quattro Brings RS Performance To Compact Clas

It may not have picked up the RS1 title as we predicted but there’s no denying that the new Audi A1 quattro is worthy of wearing the storied RS badge.

Set for debut at March’s 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the sporty A1 quattro will come packing a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with no less than 256 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

As its name suggests, drive will be sent to all four wheels via a standard quattro all-wheel drive system.

Looking almost identical to the hyper-aggressive A1 clubsport quattro Concept that we saw earlier this year, the new A1 variant features oversized air intakes up front, chunky side skirts, an aggressive rear wing, and huge exhausts jutting out of an integrated rear diffuser.

It is available only in Glacier White metallic, and its roof is painted high-gloss black. The front bumper is muscular, the frame and grate of the single-frame grille are high-gloss black. Note, however, the curved bars in the headlights (“wings” as Audi likes to call them) are red. The grille, the roof arch and the rear hatch, meanwhile, all sport quattro badges.

Inside, there’s black Silk Nappa leather trim on most surfaces, a pair of sports seats with multi-way adjustment up front, stainless steel pedals, and special badging. Audi’s MMI interface and a Bose stereo with 14 speakers is also fitted as standard.

The instrument cluster has a number of eye-catching features, including white needles, a red tachometer, the quattro logo and the color display for the driver information system. The multifunction sport steering wheel, like in most sporty Audis, is flattened at the bottom, and the shift lever knob is made of aluminum.

Audi predicts that the potent hatch will accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 5.7 seconds and go on to reach a top speed of 152 mph.

Only 333 examples are scheduled to be built, making this an instant classic, and sadly, none are scheduled to make it over to the U.S.
