Windows Phone 8.1 about to get its first update

Windows Phone 8.1 may have just started rolling out about a week ago, yet Microsoft is already planning its first patch, and no – it's not a hotfix. In typical Microsoft fashion, it's going to be called GDR 1 (General Distribution Release 1) and is going to bring a few nifty little features for both users and OEMs.

First of all, it seems like WP 8.1 will be able to support smart cases, however it is yet unknown whether Microsoft intends to manufacture its own case, or if it will be left as an option for third
parties and OEMs to tinker with. We can also expect support for 1280 x 800 WXGA resolution and 7" screen devices. The update is also meant to enable VoLTE on WP 8.1 handsets – the tech itself may still be rather young and scarcely distributed, but it would seem that Microsoft wants to be well prepared for the near future.

As far as user interface goes – we know there will be folders added to the Start screen. Just like in other systems, the user would be able to create a new folder on the home screen by dragging one Live Tile on top of another. Cortana will now be available as a phonebook entry as well, which will help integrate her better with car consoles that do not support voice activation with Bluetooth-connected phones.

Additional functions for manufacturers will now allow them to hide the "Auto scan for updates" function, rearrange the Start screen layout, and enable/disable the SD card for phone updates.

The Developer Preview of the GDR 1 is expected to arrive in August this year.
