Android continued to add to its leading market share in the U.S.over the last year. For the three months ended in August 2013, the open source OS had 56.1% of the smartphone market in the states. A year later, that figure increased to 63.6% for an increase of 7.5 percentage points. During that same time period, the U.S. market share of iOS declined by 7.4pp to 30.1%. The statistics don't include the launch of the latest iPhone models. Apple raised the screen size on the Apple iPhone 6  to 4.7 inches in an attempt to compete with larger-screened Android models. The tech titan also added a 5.5-inch phablet to its lineup with the Apple iPhone 6 Plus.

Microsoft picked up a small bit of market share over the last year, as its Windows Phone mobile OS grabbed 4.7% of the U.S. smartphone market over the three months ended in August. That is an increase of .8pp over the last year. The "other" group, which includes BlackBerry, saw its share decline by .9 percentage point over the last year to 1.6%.

In the top five European markets, Android tacked on 3 percentage points to grab 75.8% of the smartphone market in that region. That increased the lead over iOS to 62.2 percentage points, as Apple's mobile OS lost .4pp to own 13.6% of the market share in those five countries. Windows Phone had a solid 9.2% share of the top five European markets after a gain of .7pp over the last year.

In individual European markets, Android had a market share as high as 88.1% in Spain. Outside of the U.S., Australia had the largest market share for iOS at 29.3%. With 14.4% of the market, Windows Phone had a nice sized fan base in Italy.
