The Google Play edition line-up has been in flux quite a bit this year,
mostly with devices being removed from the Store. At one point, the
Google Play edition roster was quite varied, but right now the only
options are the HTC One (M8) and the Moto G. One device that everyone
expected that never arrived was the Samsung Galaxy S5 GPe, but Google
may have accidentally outed it.
Obviously, today was a
big day for Google with the announcement of the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and
Android 5.0 Lollipop; and, along with those announcements came an
overhaul of the Android.com website. There is something interesting down
near the bottom of the page under the "Customized by you, for you"
heading. There, you'll see a number of devices, most of which can be
purchased through Google Play, like the Nexus 5, Nexus 7, HTC One (M8)
GPe (all of which are shown running Android 5.0), Moto 360, and LG G
Watch. But, there is another device in that image: a Samsung Galaxy S5
Google Play edition.
As noted, that is not a
device that is currently available for purchase. It could be that the
device will soon be added to the Google Play edition roster soon. It
might also have been a device planned for the Android Silver program, which has apparently lost momentum. Or, it might be nothing. We'll have to wait and see.
