A screen grab of what is allegedly a CAD drawing of the iPhone 6
indicates that the new Apple handset might have a slightly protruding
camera lens and ring, in a stark difference to Apple's flat-out approach
so far. The schematic shows a prototype, labeled N56, equipped with two
camera modules - one largely flush with the surface, which is 6.7mm
high, and one that sticks out about a millimeter more, at 7.7
millimeters.
Even if this thing is legit, it still
remains uncertain which of the two prototypes is going to be chosen by
Apple. We all know that Sir Jony Ive and his design team are often
toying around with tens of prototypes for every element of an upcoming
iPhone redesign, so the truth might be one of those sizes, or something
altogether in the middle. In any case, what we are getting from this
leak, provided that it turns out credible, is the actual thickness of
the iPhone 6 itself, pegged at about 7 mm, or slightly below, which
jibes with many rumors about an ultrathin chassis that have appeared so far.
If
so, Apple's upcoming handset will be the thinnest iPhone ever produced,
with a girth more akin to an iPod touch, rather than a handset equipped
with all the required paraphernalia, like a cellular modem, high-res
camera, and wireless antenna. Moreover, the screen grab confirms that
the iPhone 6 might indeed look like all the dummies and prototypes that
have been floating around for months, with rounded corners, and
separator strips at the top and bottom of the rear.
