Announced back in September, Samsung’s Gear VR virtual reality headset
(developed in collaboration with Oculus) will be available to buy
starting early next month in the US, with other markets possibly
following soon after.
The device that will go on sale in the US is actually called “Gear VR Innovator’s Edition,” and isn’t really made for regular customers. Instead, it’s more aimed at “developers and enthusiasts”, coming with an Oculus Mobile SDK that provides “everything they need to build and experiment with the platform before the hardware and software are ready for consumers.” Various apps specifically designed for the VR will be released in the coming months.
The Gear VR Innovator’s Edition will cost $199, or $249 if you want it bundled with a Bluetooth gamepad.
As you may know, the Gear VR doesn’t work as a standalone device, and needs to be coupled with a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 handset. To learn more about Samsung’s first virtual reality headset, you can check out our Gear VR hands-on.
