HTC
Corp. is reportedly hard at work on its next flagship device. The new
smartphone is being called “Hima” internally by HTC, according to tech
informant @upleaks. Many have already taken to calling the device the
HTC One M9, but there are also murmurs that HTC may do away with its M
series of smartphones and name the upcoming device “Hima.”
The informant also shared early hardware specifications for the HTC One M9 or HTC Hima, which indicate that the device would be quite powerful. According to the leaked information, the device may be powered by the recently released Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chip, the high-end processor expected for many premium smartphones in 2015, and the Adreno 430 GPU. Additionally, the leak also predicts a 5-inch Full HD 1080p display, 3GB of RAM a 2,840mAh battery and the Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system with HTC’s Sense 7.0 user interface.
HTC has already shown its keen interest in photography with the recently released HTC Desire Eye smartphone, which features 13-megapixel lenses for both its front and back cameras. The HTC Hima may build on that with a 20.7-megapixel rear camera, and a 13-megapixel front camera. Such a lens would rival those seen on Sony’s Xperia line.
The HTC flagship is expected to be announced at the World Mobile Congress conference in March. Manufacturers including Samsung Electronics Co., LG Electronics and Sony Corp. are scheduled to showcase new products during this time.
HTC’s flagship devices are often well reviewed due to their sleek all-metal designs (the 2014 flagship HTC One (M8) is 90 percent metal), but struggle in the sales department. The manufacturer reported a 33 percent drop in revenue in July and has reportedly sold about 5 million HTC One (M8) handsets. Like many other manufacturers, HTC has felt the heat from domestic Chinese manufacturers, such a Xiaomi, Lenovo and Huawei, which have had market share eaten up by larger smartphones makers throughout 2014.
In August, HTC launched the HTC One (M8) for Windows, which also got rave reviews, but was not expected to sell well. HTC’s other claims to fame in 2014 include the mid-range HTC Desire 510 smartphone, which features a 64-bit processor and the HTC Re Camera, which is intended as an easy-to-hold solution to the mobile camera.
