Last Call For Nexus 5: Google Halts Production To Make Way For Nexus 6

The Nexus 5 smartphone is going the way of the dinosaur. With Google’s new Nexus 6 flagship selling out on the Play Store weekly, the tech giant is retiring its 2013 smartphone.

Google confirmed on Thursday that the Nexus 5 is no longer in production. “Once they are gone, they're gone, so we'd suggest people get them while they can,” a Google representative told TechRadar.

The red and white Nexus 5 models are no longer available at Google Play. The store still shows the black Nexus 5 model, but it’s listed as out of stock.

The Nexus 5 16GB model sells for $350, while the 32GB is $399 -- its launch price. The Nexus 5 may be a hot commodity among Google aficionados who are not fans of the Nexus 6 and its 5.9-inch display. The Nexus 5 is fairly standard in size, with a 5.2-inch display.

Currently on Amazon, models of the Nexus 5 are selling for as much as $666; the cheapest price to be found is $397 for the 32GB Nexus 5. However, sellers on other sites, including Alibaba’s AliExpress and eBay, are hawking the Nexus 5 for as low as $260. Best Buy is offering the Nexus 5 for $99.99 with a two-year contract on Sprint.

The Nexus 6 is currently out of stock, but Google announced in November that it would be replenishing inventory on the Play Store every Wednesday. The Nexus 6 is also available at such carriers and retailers as Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, Amazon and Best Buy.
